About

The short documentary titled "NOT FOR SALE" delves into an exploration of Athens' cultural heritage and the intricate relationships Athenians share with their open spaces, particularly focusing on open archaeological sites. Created for the Autumn School of the Netherlands Institute of Athens "Audio Visual Methods in Archaeology and Heritage Studies" in 2022, this documentary is a collaborative effort between myself and Maria Lazaro Ramírez.

Against the backdrop of the city's rich history, the film examines how Athenians perceive and value their cultural heritage, shedding light on the significance of open spaces within the urban landscape. With a special emphasis on Filopappou Hill, an open archaeological space, the documentary unveils the unique stories and shared memories that Athenians associate with these open areas.

In stark contrast, the documentary draws attention to the fenced and ticketed Acropolis – an emblematic symbol of Athens' cultural heritage. This iconic site stands as a reminder of the intersection between history, commerce, and the preservation of heritage. "NOT FOR SALE" prompts viewers to reflect on the implications of commodifying cultural heritage and the complex interplay between accessibility, attachment, and memory.

As the narrative unfolds, the voices of Athenians come to life, sharing personal and shared memories associated with open archaeological spaces. These narratives showcase the genuine emotional bonds that tie people to these sites and illuminate the sense of belonging and cultural continuity they provide.

"NOT FOR SALE" encapsulates a poignant exploration of Athenians' perceptions of cultural heritage, underscoring the nuanced relationships they share with open spaces and archaeological sites. The documentary serves as a thought-provoking visual journey, inviting viewers to contemplate the value of accessibility, preservation, and collective memory in shaping a city's identity.
